Here we enter classic Fighting Fantasy; Armies of Death. This is the fourteenth book in the successful Fighting Fantasy gamebook series, this time written entirely by Ian Livingstone. It is set in once again in the popular setting of Allansia and is a further sequel to Deathtrap Dungeon and Trial of Champions.

Book Description:The kingdom of Allansia is under threat. Agglax the evil Zombie-Lord is amassing an army of undead warriors in easter Allansia, beyond the Forest of Fiends. His army increases in size with every attack on the local villages. Every day its ranks are swelled with slaughtered victims under Agglax’s evil spell. Unless they are stopped now, the undead will take over the entire kingdom.

YOU are Allansia’s only hope. Your mission is to raise an army which will defeat the terrifying undead troops… but how can you conquer an army which grows in numbers with every battle it fights?

Part-story, part-game, this is a book with a difference - one in which you become the hero! A pencil and an eraser are all you need to make your journey. YOU decide which route to take, which creatures to fight and which dangers to risk.

In this adventure you take on the role of a hero who has survived the trials and tribulations of Baron Sukumvit's Deathtrap Dungeon. Walking through the streets of Fang, you are often accosted by people wishing to hear stories of your success. You grow tired of these however, and you feel the need to seek more adventures still. With your prize money of 20,000 gold pieces, you proceed to have a castle built for your return, but you also decide to hire an army.

Then a scavenger named Drek brings bad tidings from Eastern Allansia. Whilst searching a ruined temple near Zengis, Drek came across a black clay pot that was corked and sealed with black wax. He could not curb his curiosity and promptly smashed the pot open in search of gems and precious artefacts. What he got however, was a first hand view of the reformation of Agglax the Shadow Demon.

The infamous Agglax was thus reborn on Titan. Unfortunately for Allansia, he has embarked on a ruse of creating an undead army to bring terror and doom to the world. He is creating a horde of undead warriors that increase in ranks for every village or town that they attack. The only hope of dealing with Agglax, is to amass an army yourself that will be able to match his, and in the end bring you victory and save Allansia in the process. Therefore, you start recruiting and set off towards the Forest of Fiends where he is believed to reside near with his army. Although you don't accept every warrior that answers your advertisements, you set off with a band of 100 Warriors, 50 Dwarfs, 50 Elven Warriors and 20 Knights.

During your journey there will be ample opportunity to add to your ranks, or replenish those that you may have lost in the skirmish battles unique to this book. Your journey across country will see you meet with all sorts of characters and races. You'll also encounter many traps, and finding and defeating Agglax will only be possible if you choose the right routes, and the right troops to recruit. With only 700 gold pieces left your choices will need to be wise.

It explores and develops certain lands within Allansia and is yet another successful addition to the Fighting Fantasy series. The Skirmish battles make this a book well worthy of note, as the combat system is easy to implement making it a very good book for all collectors to lay their hands on.
